The Miles Township Fire Company, also known as Miles Township Volunteer Fire Company, has served the residents of Miles Township and the surrounding Penns Valley region of Centre County, Pennsylvania, for more than eight decades. Its history reflects the broader development of rural volunteer fire protection in central Pennsylvania.
Founding and Early Years (1942–1950s)
The fire company was established in 1942, during a period when many rural Pennsylvania communities organized volunteer fire services to improve fire protection for farms, villages, and small towns that had previously relied on bucket brigades or distant companies. The company was formed to protect the communities centered around Rebersburg, Madisonburg, and nearby villages within Miles Township.
A decade later, in January 1952, the organization was formally recognized by the federal government and granted tax?exempt status, confirming its role as a civic and community?welfare organization. This period saw the company stabilizing its membership, fundraising practices, and apparatus acquisition.
Growth and Community Role (1960s–1990s)
As Miles Township remained largely agricultural, the fire company’s responsibilities expanded beyond structural fires to include:
- Farm and barn fires
- Brush and woodland fires
- Vehicle accidents on rural roads
- Storm and weather emergencies
Like many volunteer departments, the Miles Township Fire Company relied heavily on community fundraising events, including carnivals, raffles, and social events, which became both a financial backbone and a key part of local social life.
Modernization and Expanded Services (2000s–Present)
In the 21st century, the company continued to modernize its operations, upgrading its fire station at 102 Broad Street in Rebersburg and expanding its fleet with modern engines, tankers, and rescue equipment. These improvements allowed the company to respond more effectively to:
- Motor vehicle accidents
- Dwelling and Building Fires
- Wildfires and brush fires
- Mutual?aid calls across Centre and Clinton County
- QRS (Quick Responce Service)
Today, the Miles Township Fire Company remains a fully volunteer organization, continuing the mission established in 1942: protecting life and property while serving as a central institution in the township’s civic life. Its long history mirrors the resilience and volunteer spirit of rural Centre County communities.
